Enhanced coil protection and relining efficiency in induction furnaces

Calderys, a global leader in high temperature solutions, has launched CALDE® MICA, designed to improve coil protection and maintenance efficiency in coreless induction furnaces.

Foundry operators are exposed to a combination of constraints: rising energy costs, increasing equipment wear and the need to reduce unplanned downtime while maintaining consistent production. In this context, refractory performance is no longer the sole area of focus, with greater attention placed on critical interface areas within the furnace, such as the coil/lining interface, where safety hazards, contamination and maintenance difficulties can originate causing unplanned downtime.

CALDE® MICA is installed between the induction coil and the refractory lining. While discreet in appearance, this interface plays a crucial role in furnace operation. The solution provides:

  • Electrical insulation at the coil interface.
  • Protection against depositions within the silica lining, reducing the likelihood of short circuiting.
  • A slip plane that facilitates smoother and more controlled pushout during relining.

By tackling these operational challenges, the company says the product helps foundries improve maintenance control, reducing the risk of unplanned shutdowns and contamination incidents.

“Foundry operators are continuously looking for ways to improve reliability and simplify maintenance,” said Gert Karlsson, technical director foundry EMEA at Calderys. “CALDE® MICA directly addresses what happens at the coil interface, protecting an essential component while making relining operations more controlled and predictable. CALDE® MICA is now available in Europe and will soon be available in the rest of the world alongside our other foundry products.”

CALDE® MICA is designed to work alongside CALDE® SILICA MIX, Calderys’ established refractory lining solution for induction furnaces. This combined offering reflects a strategy to deliver integrated refractory solutions to better meet customer needs. www.calderys.com
