Best options for match-funded energy grants

With costs on the increase and a volatile energy market, it is vital businesses look at ways to save money. In sectors with high energy consumption, like foundries, reducing emissions can be a great way to cut costs.

This is easier said than done, however, when many businesses struggle to find time to review how they can reduce emissions, let alone having the capital to fund changes.

This is where the Business Energy Advice Service – Energy Intensive (BEAS EI) helps.

Experts from the fully funded service, being delivered by the MTC, WMG, Pro Enviro and Aston University, spend time with energy intensive businesses to monitor and analyse energy consumption and provide practical, sustainable, cost saving actions.

Following this assessment, businesses can apply for a match-funded grant of between £1,000 and £100,000 to pay for improvements.

One business already seeing huge savings through the BEAS EI is West Midlands based Brockhouse Group.

Brockhouse consumed 12,000,000+ kWh of energy per year, and with energy prices having risen significantly, this put immense strain on the business.

Following assessment by the BEAS EI team, it was found that Brockhouse could link its two compressed air systems, optimise their compressor operation, and target active recovery of waste heat.

These actions are expected to result in annual reductions of 585,700kWh of energy and 112 tonnes of CO2 – which could save up to £30,000.

Steve Walters, owner and director of Brockhouse Group, said: “The programme is a fantastic opportunity to get independent advice about the best options for energy and cost reduction for your business.”

Nersi Salehi at Pro Enviro, part of the BEAS EI assessment team, added: “Foundries looking to reduce energy consumption for financial and environmental reasons should consider contacting the BEAS EI service before the programme concludes at the end of March – so time is of the essence.”

“It costs nothing to apply and our experts will be able to give you clear, unbiased advice as to what your options are, and assist with a match-funded grant towards the upfront cost.”

Energy intensive SMEs (10-250 employees), who carry out an industrial process and whose energy costs are 10%+ of annual turnover or 750,000kWh annually, can access specialist support. Standard assessments are available for other industry sectors and SMEs with lower energy usage.
